Incident Reports: Things our members observed

Chain Saw Incident - Injury accident - I have a rule on my farm that no one uses a chain saw while alone. I broke the rule and cut a small cedar tree. A large tree was leaning against it and I never checked to see if it was self-supporting. It was not, and the larger tree came crashing down and would have smashed my skull if I had been three inches closer. I was lucky to escape with an injury to my eye and smashed glasses. JM

Cleaning Incident - Near Miss - My son was helping clean the house when he came to me and said that he was dizzy. He was cleaning the bathrooms and had mixed ammonia and Ajax. The Ajax had Clorox added. I knew not to do that but did not anticipate him mixing the two and had not educated him on the dangers.

Clorox and Ammonia, when mixed together, create a toxic fume. JT

Assembly Incident - Minor Injury - While putting together an entertainment center I let the knife slip that I was using to open the box. I cut my finger, but did not require stitches. Still, I've had a sore finger for the week. I was rushing to work too fast and should have slowed down. Anon

Hobby Incident - Minor Injury - While using a "Wood Burner" to make a piece of art our cat jumped on my leg and surprised me. As I kicked him away I touched the burner and got a good blister on my finger. Pets and dangerous tools do not mix. MT

Seasonal Reminder - Wasp, Yellow Jackets, and Snakes all begin to act differently in the late summer, especially in August. Wasps and yellow jackets defend their nest more aggressively because they do not have time to build another before winter. Snakes tend to travel away from their home territory in search of food and places to hibernate. Use more caution than normal for the next month.

Give your incident report to David or Jona at the next meeting or e.mail to djksrm@hiwaay.net or call 370-7910 and leave the message you would like to see appear in the next newsletter. Just make a short description of some incident you see like the ones at the beginning of this newsletter.
