Road Incident - Dangerous Situation - I was driving on 157 on a two-lane section where they are working on the road. I met a truck and a rock flew up and busted my windshield from side to side making it difficult to see well enough to drive safely.
Road Incident - None Injury Accident - I was driving in Iuka on a two-lane road with a double yellow line in the center of the road. A car approaching me was near the centerline and two blocks away. As the car got closer it gradually crossed the centerline. I moved to the shoulder as the car passed by me because it was well into my lane. The Pickup behind me was not watching carefully and the car "Side Swiped" him. While speaking to him after the accident he said, "I wondered why you were running off the road!"
Home Incident - Dangerous Situation - While visiting my daughter's house I stepped out of the shower onto a floor rug. The linoleum tile under it was slick and it slipped under my feet.
Road Incident - Dangerous Situation - I was driving to Montgomery on 65 and when I got to Birmingham I found myself in the wrong lane to make the turn. There were trucks all around me and I had to move in between two of them to get in the right lane. I was talking and did not notice where I was. I should have kept my mind on the driving. It would have been safer to take the wrong road and turn around than take the chances that I did.
Seasonal Reminder - Jimmie McWilliams reminds us: Just received a message from "Homeowners Magazine", It warns that startup of home heating devices, that may be dysfunctional, may kill from monoxide discharge. (Two already dead in Lauderdale county according to TimesDaily) Metal fatigue from abrupt change in extreme temperature may cause cracks or complete disconnections. Also, chimney living birds or animals may clog chimneys. Check that heating unit before and after starting it.
Seatbelts, Seatbelts, Seatbelts! Another serious car accident has occurred in the city limits of Cherokee and the lack of use of Seatbelts may have caused another death. Two men were traveling in a car on Posey Lane and failed to make the turn near the Middle School. Cherokee Police Chief, Paul Norman, says that it appeared that neither of the occupants of the car were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. He feels that had they been wearing seatbelts, it is likely that both would have survived the accident with less serious injuries.
This brings the number of Cherokee Area residents that have died recently in car crashes without seatbelts to NINE. That is an astounding number for the population of this area. We must take every opportunity to stress the importance of the use of Seat Belts. The September 24 newsletter was devoted to discussing this topic. You can review it on the Internet at www.TruloveStyle.com Feel free to pass this address on to anyone who needs to be encouraged to wear seatbelts.
Participate in our Safety Program: Remember - If you did not turn in an incident report, you deprived other members of an opportunity to learn from your observations and experiences. If you were not watching for incidents, you missed the opportunity to learn from a near miss or unsafe practice. Just watching for "accidents waiting to happen" will make you a safer person.
Give your incident report to David or Jona at the next meeting or e.mail to djksrm@hiwaay.net or call 370-7910 and leave the message you would like to see appear in the next newsletter. Just make a short description of some incident you see like the ones at the beginning of this newsletter.
