Schools

The Colbert County School System operates three schools in Cherokee that serve the local area. K-4 grades are taught at Cherokee Elementary located on North Pike. Grades 5-8 are taught at Cherokee Middle School, located on Old Lee Highway. Grades 9-12 are located at Cherokee High School which is on North Pike near the Elementary School.

Northwest Shoals Community College is located in Muscle Shoals and is a 25 minute drive from the house. This school offers Freshman and Sophomore level classes, technical and vocational training and adult education courses.

The University of North Alabama is located in Florence and is a 30 minute drive away. UNA offers four year course work in a wide range of degrees and graduate level work in education and business.

Shopping and Services

Basic shopping for groceries, hardware, autoparts, and furniture can be found in Cherokee. Convenience stores and gas stations are located on North Pike, in Barton and along Hwy 72 in Cherokee.

Speciality stores, malls, and other services are located in any of the Quad Cites (Tuscumbia, Sheffield, Muscle Shoals, and Florence) which lies 20-30 minutes to the East.

Parks and Recreation

Cherokee City Park is located about 1/2 Mile from downtown Cherokee on North Pike. This small park has two tennis courts, a covered outdoor basketball court and a lighted children's playground.

Natchez Trace Colbert Park is located on the North side of the Tennessee River on the Natchez Trace. This 1,700 acre park has picnic areas, a swimming beach, a public boat ramp, restrooms, nature trails, and a seasonal visitors center. Features of interest include the home site of George Colbert, an Indian who operated a stand and ferry across the river, and the entrance to Georgetown Cave which supports a maternal colony of endangered brown bats.

Colbert County Riverton Rose Trail Park near the point where Bear Creek enters the Tennessee River. This park has numerous picnicking areas, a public boat ramp, overnight camping and fishing.

Spring Park is located in historic downtown Tuscumbia, just went through a million dollar improvement. It features cover picnic areas and a lake below an beautiful spring with exquisite landscaping.
